Portrush Prepares for the Greatest Show in Golf
The 153rd Open set to shatter records as Royal Portrush welcomes 278,000 fans in a celebration of the sport and spirit of Northern Ireland
Seoul, Korea - The 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush will become the biggest golf event ever staged outside St Andrews, with an expected attendance of 278,000 fans between 13–20 July.
The return to the Antrim Coast, following the unforgettable 2019 edition where Shane Lowry lifted the Claret Jug, has sparked phenomenal interest. Over a million ticket applications were submitted, underscoring the enduring passion for golf across Ireland.
“This is a landmark for The Open,” said R&A Chief Executive Mark Darbon. “We’re thrilled to welcome the world back to Portrush for what promises to be a spectacular Championship.”
The numbers tell a story of growth. Back in 2019, 237,750 spectators passed through the gates. Now, a new high watermark will be set—not just for The Open, but for any sporting event in Northern Ireland. The local economy stands to benefit handsomely, with more than £213 million in projected economic returns, according to a study by Sheffield Hallam University.
“This is more than a golf tournament,” said Aine Kearney of Tourism Northern Ireland. “It’s a global spotlight on Northern Ireland’s beauty, its potential, and its people.”
Making the game accessible remains a priority. The R&A’s long-standing Kids Go Free initiative will allow over 27,000 under-16s to experience the magic of The Open. Meanwhile, the ever-popular Open Camping Village will house 4,600 guests—nearly a third of them under 25.
Portrush, once again, is ready to charm the golfing world. The only question left is: who will rise from the 156-strong field to be crowned Champion Golfer of the Year?
